Attending The Running Event for the First Time

For years, I’ve watched from afar with great interest as running media including Believe in the Run, Kofuzi, Road Trail Run, and others cover exciting running innovations and insights, showcased at The Running Event. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, the industry’s “premier run and outdoor specialty retail conference and trade show” is the event to witness the evolution of running.

This week, I’m getting up-close and personal with the event in Austin, TX by attending with a press badge! That’s right, I’m headed to the Lone Star State as the lone media registrant with fewer than 50 Instagram followers. Hmm, maybe it’s time I start paying for some bot followers? Never!

To say I’m excited is an understatement the size of, well, Texas. I’ve always wanted to attend this special event but it’s not open to the general public. Running retailers from all over attend to meet with the biggest brands in running. Throughout the week I’ll meet with these brands in the expo hall, network during fun events, and discover what’s ahead for the world of running in 2024 and beyond.

Saying “yes”

But it’s not just a momentous occasion for the running world. It’s my first industry event and my second foray this year venturing outside my comfort zone to meet new people. As an introvert who gets bad anxiety in unfamiliar social situations, I’ve always been hesitant to “put myself out there.” I’ve found it’s much easier to stick to myself and go my own way. But while it’s more comfortable that way, it’s also very limiting. Real growth comes from saying “yes” to new opportunities and meeting new people.

I learned that lesson back in July, when I traveled to Baltimore for Believe in the Run’s Summer GRIT party. GRIT is a bi-annual, distance project that challenges runners to complete a higher monthly mileage goal than normal (responsibly). I met many friendly faces, including the BITR team, ASICS crew, and Kofuzi — all gracious with their time and conversation. In the past I would’ve simply stayed home and avoided the stress that comes with public events and meeting strangers. In fact, that’s what I did just a year ago when I decided to skip last year’s Summer GRIT party.

This year I opened myself to new opportunities which opened the door to new friendships, memories, and tons of fun. The best part? People didn’t mind being around my sweaty, disgusting self after an epic 3-mile group run in the grueling Baltimore heat. Maybe they were just being nice? I had an unforgettable time. And, most importantly, I learned that a running community transcends all boundaries and obstacles, including the ones we arbitrarily place in front of ourselves.

Follow your passion

With over 3,000 attendees, including 280+ exhibiting companies and a thousand retailers, The Running Event will be an entirely new and eye-opening experience. In addition to a 66,000+ sq. ft. exhibit hall, the event offers an educational program addressing the most pressing challenges and important trends happening in the specialty retail industry and networking events including a 5K, exhibit hall happy hours, and Welcome Reception.

I never thought I’d attend a running event—or any event—as a member of “the media” but I also never thought I’d create a running website. But I’ve discovered good things happen when I follow my passion. I can’t wait to see where that passion for running—and writing—take me during The Running Event. I’ll be back with a recap of all the action, including all the upcoming shoes and gear that caught my eye.
